SEPTEMBER IS

ANIMAL LIBERATION MONTH

Animal Liberation Month takes place every September. The month-long observance highlights the rights, lives, and experiences of Non-Human People. It is celebrated through Antispeciesist Social Justice Education, Vegan Animal Rights Activism, and Direct Action.

DIVERSE BIOGRAPHIES

Animal Liberation Month is a celebration of non-human communities and cultures. It is a time to learn about the diverse lives and experiences of non-human animals - animals trapped in human systems of exploitation and violence - animals living outside human control - and animals at the margins, living in spaces that are designed by and for humans. Animal Liberation Month centers the lives and experiences of these people that are often marginalized and ignored by humans.

SYSTEMS OF OPPRESSION

Animal Liberation Month is a time to resist the ideologies and practices of Speciesism and Carnism. When humans participate in and perpetuate these oppressive systems, non-humans are killed, exploited, treated as food, materials, resources, objects, tools, and property, and subjected to incarceration, mutilation, enslavement, sexual violence, non-consensual experimentation, and myriad other forms of injustice.

Speciesism, Racism, Ableism, Sexism, Queerphobia, and many other oppressive systems are mutually constitutive. The discriminatory social orderings they produce uphold and reinforce one another. Under Speciesist and Carnist social hierarchies, Non-Human People are often de-personified, objectified, and marginalized. Animal Liberation Month is a time to strengthen the bonds of solidarity across the socially constructed borders of species, and work for justice for everyone, of every species.

SPACES OF REFUGE

Multispecies communities of support and safety are important spaces of refuge for non-human animals who have survived situations of violence. In these spaces that respect the rights and agency of people of all species, community members can rediscover, and form anew, identities, relationships, and chosen families, without looming threats of arbitrary separation, predation, and other forms of violence and exploitation. Animal Liberation Month is a time for people from diverse species backgrounds to co-create and support spaces where survivors of speciesist violence can live and flourish.

MULTISPECIES COMMUNITY

Many institutions, communities, and spaces are segregated and hierarchically organized on the basis of Race, Ability, and Gender, through Class Stratification and Colonization, and along many other mutually constitutive axes of discrimination. Species operates as one such axis of discrimination. Animal Liberation Month is a time to break down speciesist physical and social boundaries, reshape spaces that have historically reinforced Human Supremacy in more equitable and welcoming ways, and form politics and infrastructure that are responsive to the rights and interests of non-human animals.

ANIMALS, ALLIES, ACCOMPLICES

When humans oppress non-humans, non-humans fight back. Through acts of obstruction, sabotage, and retaliation, by showing one another care and affection, and by struggling to survive and escape situations of violence, non-humans resist human-imposed oppression. Non-human animals are marginalized people engaged in liberatory struggle.

Animal Liberation Month is a time for human allies and accomplices to affirm the agency of non-humans, share the stories of non-humans who resist oppression, celebrate successful non-human resistance, mourn the lives ended by speciesist violence, and take action to support non-humans engaged in the struggle for animal liberation.
